Kattha Arabesque
The piece
Kattha, the catechu brown of paan, gives this field its deep chocolate colour. Over it, gold stems scroll and interlace in mirrored arabesques, holding palmettes and lotus heads in leaf green, coral, rose and ivory, with a small medallion stacked along the centre line. The drawing is dense but symmetrical, and the gold lines catch light against the dark ground. An ivory border carries rosettes and curling leaves in green and terracotta, between narrow multicoloured guards. It suits a study, a dining room with dark wood or a living room in olive and brown leather. Hand-knotted in Jaipur from hand-spun New Zealand wool and mulberry silk on a cotton warp, then made to order in any size and colourway.
