Sopan

The piece

The gnomon of the great sundial is a triangle of stone with a staircase running up its slope to a small cupola at the top. Sopan, an old word for a flight of steps, is that slope cut into wool: a tall triangle of sandstone terracotta whose long edge climbs in steps, each tread picked out in ivory. Shown as a rendering. Woven to order in Jaipur.
