Baori

The piece

A baori is a stepwell: a shaft cut down to the water and lined with flights of steps, so people could follow the level as it fell. Chand Baori at Abhaneri, among the oldest in Rajasthan, has some 3,500 steps over thirteen levels, and from above it is pure geometry. Baori draws that plan in sandstone light and shadow, every flight stepping down to one square of blue green water, the outline stepping like the rim. Shown as a rendering. Woven to order in Jaipur.
