Rajju

The piece

Rajju is the cord that measured an altar; the Shulba texts use it as another name for the measure itself. Baudhayana set down what a cord stretched along a diagonal can do: it makes as much as the two sides make separately. Rajju lays that cord corner to corner across undyed wool, knotted into the pile as a twisted band, a peg at each end and the faint grid it measured left behind. Shown as a rendering. Woven to order in Jaipur.
