Ishtaka
The piece
Ishtaka is the word for brick, and above all for the brick of a sacrificial altar. The great fire altar went up in five layers of bricks made to a few set sizes. Ishtaka lays its own courses in terracotta, madder and sand, a herringbone that keeps turning back on itself, every brick a little sun faded and every joint carved. Shown as a rendering. Woven to order in Jaipur.
