Shulba

Prachi

The piece

Every altar in the Shulba texts begins with one line running east to west, the prachi. One way to find it: drive a peg into level ground, draw a circle round it with a cord, and mark where the tip of its shadow touches the circle before noon and again after. Join the two marks and you have east and west. Prachi is that line down a runner, with the peg, the circle and the two marks near one end and measured ticks all the way along. Shown as a rendering. Woven to order in Jaipur.
