Parimandal

The piece

Parimandala means circle. The Shulba texts show how to turn a square altar into a round one of the same size: tie a cord at the centre, reach toward a corner, and draw the circle a third of the way past the side, so it runs just outside the square's sides and just inside its corners. Parimandal keeps both figures on the floor, the square in a double line of carved flax, the circle as the rug itself, the peg still at its heart. Shown as a rendering. Woven to order in Jaipur.
