Linear Chaos

The piece

Pale silver bars cross a charcoal slate ground at sharp angles, some broad, some thin as a pencil line, like light falling through a window frame. The dark field shows abrash, faint streaks of lighter and deeper grey that run with the pile, and the silver strokes carry a soft sheen. Nothing is centred; the lines gather on the left and open out to the right. It sits well with concrete, steel or pale oak. Hand-knotted in Jaipur from hand-spun New Zealand wool with mulberry silk accents on a cotton warp, 10 to 14 knots per inch.
