Dharti

The Land, From Above

The story

Fly over Rajasthan and the land becomes a drawing.

The salt pans at Sambhar lie in a white grid. In winter the mustard fields flower yellow. Wind combs the dunes into ripples, the Aravallis fold into contour, and in Bagru lengths of dyed cloth dry side by side in the sun.

Nobody drew any of it. Salt workers, farmers, dyers, builders and weather made these pictures, one season at a time.

Dharti, the word for earth, carves them into wool and silk, knotted by hand in Jaipur. Fifteen pieces in three chapters: salt and stone, the worked land, and the long light.
