Sambhar

The piece

South-west of Jaipur lies Sambhar, India's largest inland salt lake. On its eastern shore the water is let into shallow pans and left to the sun until only salt remains, and from the air the pans become a loose white grid. Here they are carved at different heights in undyed wool, a few touched with pink, the crust picked out in silk. Shown as a rendering. Woven to order in Jaipur.
